interesting talk about the anticipated changes in realtime and rich media. it was a good talk.
0 - eliminate - what can you get rid of
1 - standardize - what can you standardize?
e - extrapolate the exponential change
infinity - ubiquitize - what do you need to make it pervasive?
Recipe?
1. think BIG. how can we disrupt?
2. disrupt
3. start small - solve simple pain point well
4. evolve quickly - 5 phase plan
5. start - lead and others will follow
6. communicate - often and simply

great talk. much more than the creative commons talk i saw at TED
he talked about the mash up and REMIS of the conversations of YouTube and toh
technique has been democratized.
those who spend their lives writing text are irrelevant to the new generations. those who create images and multi-media are.
commercial/sharing hybrid is the new business model.
command/sharing hybrid is new for governments. see [http://www.sunlightlabs.com/]
change.gov is one of the new hybrids.
GREAT TALK - have to get this when we get the CD at the end.
authenticity is the biggest issue. and the US has to sort out its issue of democracy.

WOW. what a talk. this was excellent.

He opened with a great dialogue. then went on to talk about his book We-Think. the book is described on you tube [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiP79vYsfbo]
he then went into multiple futures. he described some assumptions and then went on to show both sides of many futures. the future of the internet. one axis being size with the other axis is big/small. the web will be good and big. he argues that the web is a great place for collaboration we only have 10 years behind us.
THIS TALK IS ONE TO GET AGAIN from the conference documentation. WATCH FOR IT.
the direction that he thinks it is going...he showed a guitar clip of a boy in korea which has been seen by 53 million. he then went on to an assumed story of the same boy trying to visit the BBC to try to get...... the big change is you do not have to ask permission. this kid did not have to ask permission. it was put up by others. he described the community of baseball hat wearing kids playing pachabels cannon in D. what a GREAT story.
THIS IS THE POWER OF THE GLOBAL INTERNET. WHO IS READY?
in the 80's/90s the landscape was a beach of large boulders. now there are thousands of people dropping pebbles on the beach. they are rising to engulf the large boulders. this is the challenge of the relationship between boulders and pebbles. Google will find the pebble on the beach using the knowledge of all the other pebbles. the future of business will be all bout the creation and organization of pebbles. it is not about boulders.
so, what is the relationship between boulders and pebbles. how can boulders learn to talk pebbles? the Obama story is all about being a pebble which became a boulder. the challenge will be if the pebble-based organization can work in a world of boulders. then also, what do we do with the boulders. we need to have boulders. we need then to understand the relationships between the two. this is a fundamental.
if you want a design principle for the new world. it is to think with. so far we have learned that things are designed to deliver TO us or FOR us. we have to move towards WITH. learning with, working with, co-creating with. leadership with, with the environment, not doing things TO or FOR it. the new logic of organizations working WITH.
the more you treat an organization like a rock, needing propulsion. this does not work. we need to think of organizations like birds. the only way to move a flock is with bird seed
it was another great talk by a great orator.

India will have a continued growth [9%] even in the current economic downturn. the capability for this to happen, then the country must continue to focus on development of its infrastructure. 2000 years ago, India accounted for 30% of the global GDP production.
due to the caste system, only 3.5% of citizens were able to go to school. this is a cadre of 180 million.
every 6th person of the world is Indian. every 6th Indian is an untouchable. This has to change. inclusion and eduction is the best way to make change. millions who were left out of the mainstream are now able to begin a path to reemergence. he is one of the 180 million untouchables.
in 2006 he took a 90% pay cut and joined the education world. he was head of the Indian Central bank. he took it as his mission to change the educational program of the country. he took over a system which was hopelessly out of touch with the real world. the curricula had not been updated for decades. the ICT systems were non-existent. the connection between the educational institutions and society had disappeared. he took to bring the isolation of the university to an end. the mission of the university can be found here [http://www.unipune.ernet.in/indexout.html]
average age of Inidan citizens is 24 and will remain under 30 for a long time. the nation also faces an increased number of aged who remain untapped as social potential. thus, the univerisity now has a senior citizens workshop. there is also not a special PhD programme for the elderly.

democracy at large is really about how to live together in the world. one challenge is how to make citizenship meaningful for the general public. today the individual no longer feels that there is connectivity between all citizens. public services and public service are both vital for this. we need to rebuild institutional capacity in order to engender a collective trust as an international community. in the 21stC we have to bring civil service back into our educational messages so that we can have stronger world as a whole.
he saw two revolutions. one of democracy and one of connectivity/technology. 24 April 1972 was the bloodless revolution in Portugal. the nation of which he was president twice.
are democracy and connectivity linked? does the rise of connectivity enhance or bring democracy? or do they only bring an improvement in the life conditions? he noted the recent US election as a situation in which democracy was energized by Web2.0. the Obama campaign provided a way for people to feel empowered. this election has not indicated that the internet will be an irreplaceable part of elections from now own.
The internet is becoming like an Agora. we have the opportunity to go back to a politics of dialogue rather than singular broadcast. this is an opportunity for an emerging collective intelligence to be engaged.
his new focus is on tuberculosis as the president of an organization to defeat the spread of the disease. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Plan_to_Stop_Tuberculosis].
he pointed out that we need to find a way in which to have conversations in which we can agree to disagree and then also find a common destiny?

an African Minister stated 'i want a CEO of NGOs' they are running around doing anything they want with people who are paid far more than my staff. if we could only harness them for the national good, rather for their personal gratification.'
it reminds me of the great advice from another African leader at WEF Davos 2007 who said 'stop giving us aid; help us help ourselves!'
this is a plea that really resonated with me. the big question is, then what should be done....
Kristin Peterson - Inveno [SF Based] [http://www.inveneo.org/]
an NGO dedicated to helping provide ICT to those who needed it most. their mission is to serve organizations that operate in rural communities to better understand their needs. they like the lens of the local community as they understand best what is needed. education. health. relief. economic development. .

Charles Hall-Pinner. Developing Awareness of World Need [DAWN] Foundation
he is a prosperous businessman from the Bay area who has founded a foundation to help teenagers become more aware of the great challenges of the world. he is very concerned about the self-absorbed nature of the teenager today in the developed world. his primary point is to get government partnership.
ONE of the members of the audience noted that the there is a deep NGO FATIGUE in Africa. There are so many right now, that they are getting fed up. they come in, do some great project, then leave. it is a broken system. The NGO will do a tiny project in a country. There is a DEEP NEED for bringing the NGOs into a coordinated alignment.
JD Stanley III showed a mock up of the Personal Travel Assistant. it is pretty interesting. it is all about the individual's choices. Singapore and San Francisco are working to develop this as a service from the city.
need to look up the paper which he wrote on Digital Swarming [http://www.scribd.com/doc/7823300/Digital-swarming-by-JD-Stanley-of-Cisco]
Rafaele Gareri - Director of Innovation and Territory Development. Territory of Brescia, Italy
it is an area which is wealthy and has a good innovative tradition. they like to promote new technologies in some areas. he described a project in which they are working with young people and information. they have created a 'device' that uses bluetooth to interact with kiosks. it was not clear what the information was, nor the device. He is a nice guy, but the aim of the project was not clear until the second presenter.
it is about a breathalyzer linked with ride sharing. it is really cool. [http://www.vimeo.com/2398567]
Jared Blumenfeld - City of San Francisco.
he presented their eco targets which are incredibly aggressive. then he went on to present the EcoMap which really looks good. it is there to allow the public to get a better idea of the status of their city. they have the car data from the department of motor vehicles that can be queried zip code by zip code. you can look at the city
great session!
Nicola Villa - reviewed the genesis of the CUD program. John Chambers started with a commitment at the Clinton Global two years ago. it is today set into six parts:
connected and sustainable mobility
connected and sustainable buildings
smart work centers
smart homes
cleaner, more efficient power generation
green information technology
they have moved from discovery phase into proof-of-concept in some of the cities. the next phase is solution roll-out.
this has evolved into: Connected Urban Development: A Blueprint for City Transformation.
connected and sustainable work
connected and sustainable mobility
connected and sustainable buildings
connected and sustainable energy
sustainable socio-economics
move from 'silo' projects to the fourth utility concept. urban sensors will be pervasive. this can be utilized in decision engines to turn the data into information and support, in turn, decision support capabilities.

Federico Casalengno - MIT Mobile Experience Lab [http://mobile.mit.edu/]
described the book that he wrote with Bill Mitchell. It is essentially four chapters of examples of their work from their research/studio work.
ch 1 moving around the city
ch 2 managing homes
ch 3 managing workplaces
ch 4 taking personal responsibility
he showed a short video on the connected home. it highlighted a dashboard mock-up of an energy control panel.

really great start, he showed the shopping patterns of hiself and his wife. two different contexts within the store.
fabulous presentation of the SMS data patterns from the city of Amsterdam. REALLY COOL. this is the same work that i saw from Carlo Ratti. really great expose on the traces which we leave behind thru network use.
